I lost 45 pounds in about 4 months without any real effort. And with the easy diet and lifestyle changes I made, the weight has stayed off for 5 years. I am the kind of person who does not enjoy exercise—that is, I do not like buying expensive gym memberships that I seldom use and workout videos leave me cold. The slowest walker I know, I am against any and all forms of exercise; when you call it “exercise.” But I love roller-skating, bike riding and slow strolls (yes, even slow walking counts). I feel like I am getting physical activity when I am folding laundry and doing household chores. The trick with physical activity is to find things that you enjoy doing so that it does not feel like “effort.” Incorporate those activities naturally into your life. I am living proof that physical activity does not have to be strenuous to count.

I stumbled on this weight loss secret by accident. I was tired of feeling too full after big meals, so full that all I wanted to do was take a nap. Then I found out that it is a real, bona-fide way to effortlessly lose weight. Eating small meals every four hours increases your metabolism. It keeps your energy level more constant; you never really feel hungry. This tactic also avoids a major downfall of traditional diets—the “metabolic slow-down:” when your body senses that it is being calorie-deprived, it goes into “slowdown” mode, which has the result of your body storing more fat.

Most theorists speculate that this is a remnant of our Stone-Age days, when our diets may have been more unpredictable. We never knew when we would get our next meal, and the most adaptive bodies compensated by slowing down the metabolism to make the most of every single thing consumed. The only downside to this approach is that it makes more dishes for you to wash (but see #1 above)

I replaced that drink with water (and saved about $4 a day). Replacing sugary drinks is an easy way to save hundreds of calories a day without laborious calorie-counting, which I have always refused to do. It does not take long to get used to, either. Drinking plenty of water has the added benefit of making you feel full faster. And it improves your overall health. I could never give up my coffee and drink only water like some people do. If they get results that way, more power to them, but I am not willing to go to extremes here. I am talking about “painless” ways to shed the pounds.

Thankfully, this also was not very hard and did not take a long time to get used to.

Soon, I found that I’d rather go hungry for an hour or two than to eat essentially plastic, greasy food. I am happy to say that I have lost almost all of my appetite for fast food. Preparing your own meals allows you to control your portion sizes, which are smaller if you are eating more small meals per day. The strategy also ensures that you are consuming higher-quality products.

I compromised and gave up fat in foods where I could do so without pain, like skipping the mayo on my homemade sandwiches. Then I enjoyed my real creamery cream and butter. My weight-loss tricks are not ultra-fast, but the weight did come off, steadily. And it has stayed off. I am convinced that this is the healthiest and best way to lose weight.
